Myrtle Calhoun Obituary

Myrtle Calhoun a native and resident of Grove Hill, Alabama made her transition from this life into eternal life on Friday,March 13, 2015, at her residence.
Mother Calhoun was born on February 23, 1924 to David and Minnie Lee "Mince" Pugh Calhoun. She was the second born to this union. At an early age she joined and attended Pine Chapel No.1 Baptist Church of Grove Hill, Alabama.
She married and gave birth to four children: Edward, Wilmer, Betty Jean, and Donald (transitioned). Myrtle and family relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where she met and married Beoria Simpson of Tuskegee , Alabama. Two daughters were born from this union, Lynette and Gwendolyn.
Myrtle and family moved to Richmond, Virginia. She attended Cunningham's Beauty College where she graduated as a beautician. She also worked as Manager at the Westhampton Bakery and Head Baker at the Mixing Bowl and Quality Bakeries. She enjoyed baking cakes, pastries, pies, etc.... Her expertise was in baking and decorating wedding cakes.
While in Richmond, Virginia she united with Saint Paul Baptist Church and later became a member of First Union Baptist Church. She utilized her talents by singing with the Gospel Choir, serving with the Missionary Society, Collation Committee, Pastor's Aide Ministry and Usher Ministry.
Once again she and her family relocated this time to Miami, Florida. While in Miami she switched careers and worked at the Hialeah Nursing Home in Hialeah, caring foe elderly and patients requiring rehabilitation. She worked as a Certified Nurses' Aide until she retired. She joined the Greater Macedonia Baptist Church and later years joined Fire Baptism and Truth Church faithfully serving where needed. While at Fire Baptism and Truth Church she was called into the ministry and was ordained by Pastor Grace Morman. A devoted Christian and believer of the written word, her messages and teachings were well received. Her favorite passage of scripture was 2 chronicles 7:14 " If my people, who called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways: then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin,and will heal their land".When ending her telephone conversations, "Pray Much" was the phrase she always used.
After the death of her husband Beoria Simpson, she moved to Cartersville, Georgia in 2001. Her hobbies included cooking,baking, sewing, and shopping with her daughter. Myrtle also had flare for hats which she wore with pride. In 2003 she and her daughter returned to Myrtle's birthplace, Grove Hill, Alabama. Mt Zion #2 Baptist Church in 2006. She was a shinning light at Mt. Zion wheter working with the Pastor's Aide Ministry as Chairperson, Mother's Ministry, Women's Ministry, Outreach Ministry (Jackson and Nursing Home), Sunday School and Facilitated during Noon Day Prayer and Bible Study. She was a faithful member who believed in tithing and giving cheerfully to the advancement of God's Kingdom.
Myrtle truly lived life to the fullest through the simple pleasures: chatting with friends and family, snacking, traveling, spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great children. Myrtle had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way.
She proceeded in death by parents David and Minnie Calhoun, Step father Dorsey Coats, son Donald Chapman, brother Leon Calhoun, grandson Dwayne Love and husband Beoria Simpson.
Mother Calhoun leaves to cherish her memories and love five children: Edward (Jessie) Love, Wilmer Chapman, Betty Jean (Clarence) Mattocks all of Richmond, Virginia; Lynette (Thomas) Jones-Williams of Grove Hill, Alabama and Gwendolyn Davis of Miami, Florida. Nine grandchildren: Derek (Sylvia) Love, Sonja (Maurice) Black, Rickie Chapman, Michael L. Branch, Darryl L. Mattocks, Cynthia R. (Christian) Wilkinson, Nicole C, (Devin) Hamilton, Steven E.(Marlene) Jones, and Sabrina L. (Johnnie) Davis Fuller. Twenty-one great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
